It’s one thing getting a website designed, but (completely) another thing to get it ranked. Another note here: web designers doesn’t necessary include search engine submission or optimization. Web design and SEO is two separate divisions and are usually done by separate companies/individuals.
Search engines use different rules (algorithms) to decide how web pages are indexed. Bearing this in mind, it's almost impossible to outrank your competitor that has a website for 3 years+ when you only started yours last week.
Read my lips: Ranking takes time.
No, waiting (and doing nothing) doesn't mean your website will rank. You need to do some marketing (better known as Emarketing). Remember you competitor already has linking partners, inbound links and has built up some "trust" among online users.
Your competitor surely has a facebook profile/group and may even be using twitter. Oh please, don’t open a facebook group if you have only 10 friends. And please, update states on those pages everyday! It’s really sad to view such a group to realise that the last update was 20 December 2009. If you don’t have a strategy behind it, then don’t do it!
To get your website (web pages) ranked, it may be a good idea to get an SEO expert. These guys know what they are doing. Their costs are roughly R5000 for a website audit and R3000 per month for maintenance. SEO is a long term investment. If you are looking for a quick way to get ranked (or rather get traffic to your website) you might consider a PPC (Pay Per Click) campaign. Do note that once you stop the PPC campaign your traffic to your website will stop as well.
So ask yourself... are you in it for the short term or long term? A better question might be: Am I going to try and do it myself? Or leave it to the experts?
